Welcome to The Imperfect.

an exploration of the beauty in flaws expressed through my love and exploration of sound, nature, and technology.

My name is Taylor Deupree. I’ve been writing, recording and engineering music for 35 years, mostly in the realms of ambient and lo-fi experimental, often a bend towards the quiet and the fragile. I also started a small record label, called 12k, in 1997, that focuses on similar sounds. I’m incredibly fascinated and inspired by imperfections, be they technological (film grain, reel-to-reel tape) or natural (weathered surfaces, cracks) and specifically how this aesthetic combines with a more pristine, digital (modern?) approach to creation. I find this balance to be precarious, fragile and terribly important. It is where the heart of my music lies; a tension that is vital to my expression.

Throughout the years I have found it important to keep and share studio diaries of sounds and processes. They have kept me moving forward, always exploring and give an insight to my listeners on how I create or get inspired. The Imperfect aims to continue this tradition on a platform that will allow me to share sounds, photographs and writing and hopefully inspire you to notice the small things around you, to open your ears and your eyes to find hidden beauty.

Thank you for coming along.
