just a bit of Studio Diary entry here and a look into a process i often find myself doing.
we have here an excerpt from some new experiments i’ve been working on in the studio. in hindsight, it may be a bit of a mess. i’ve been exploring some rhythmic things lately and they can get a bit jumbled:
but this was the result of taking the below sound, pitching it all down 5 half-steps and running it through a fairly harsh setting of the GoodHertz Lossy plug-in.
this is where it came from:
so, what’s going on here?
i have three loops running asynchronously with sounds from a C-15 synthesizer into the Strymon Volante and an EHX22500. the rhythmic, knocking elements (there are two, one is a bit quieter in the background) are from Kaleidoloops that recorded in-room sounds briefly and played back through their internal speakers.
this is something i do often, usually when i’m stuck or not happy with the direction of a song… instead of scrapping it i’ll take the whole thing and process it like it’s one sound. in this case pitching it all down and running the whole thing through a single plug-in to mash it all into something new, something blurred and different. sometimes this will send me in an exciting direction and be just the twist i need, other times, it doesn’t work out so well. but it is, after all, all in the experimentation.
which one do you like better?
It would be nice to have a script that records autonomously and at the end of each day autonomously processes the files. A few lines of script on Monome Norns or a player on Max Gen would make for a really cool app. Managing playback and random processing. Masking speech with some spectral processing to avoid getting caught by the wife;) Choose a buffer for post-processing, record, and enjoy…
lots of inspiration from this. Love GOODHERZ bundle.
