i really can’t believe it’s been since feb 8th that i last posted. i apologize. this will be a more regular thing, but it’s been a busy time and i was in california for a week and philadelphia for a weekend before that.
i was hoping to make a post in california but didn’t have good audio editing software with me….. because i did manage to record three fairly interesting (but short) sounds from my surroundings with the measly iPhone voice recorder
northern california felt like spring. mild weather where even 60 degrees (F) felt hot, hiking around, or sitting on Davenport Beach watching the waves crash over a giant monolithic rock not far out into the Pacific.
three sonic moments caught my ear on my trip. the first was when i took off my noise-cancelling headphones on the plane (listening to Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions) and bombarded with the cabin noise:
the pleasant change in temperature, air bouquet and sunshine from a New York winter to a California winter had my ears perking up at the birds, which choose their coasts wisely. the high frequencies of these register over 10khz, pretty crazy:
… and i was stopped in my tracks by this weird bird… i say “bird” because it was coming from high in a tree, but it absolutely could be a mammal of some sort… an owl… ? if anyone knows what makes this sound please let me know… sounds like woodblocks in shallow water:
i’m back in the snow now, which hasn’t melted from our north-facing hillside. back in the studio with some big projects to get out the door and i look forward to sharing.
in the meantime, no matter where you are, make you you make the extra effort to give a little listen to the sounds outside your door, perhaps you’ll find something mysterious and surprising as well.
i think the woodblock bird is a raven
