Thank you for the sharing Taylor. Very generous of you. Please do more of these whenever you feel like it. A book sounds a great idea worth of exploring! Daniel

Great tips, I’m always guilty of overusing reverb, but eq’ing the return sounds like a good plan.

This is very helpful advice, especially for someone like me who's still such an amateur with mixing and hasn't dared to attempt mastering anything (I don't necessarily believe in mastering my own work anyways). I tend to be heavy handed with the EQ too, so I am happy to see some validation here from you on that! :) I am also certainly heavy handed with the reverb, so I'll keep the EQing highs and lows on it in mind, I should remember to do that more.

Now *this* is advice that sounds like the "real deal", as opposed to the fluffy and superficial kind of material on mixing and mastering that is so prevalent via other means. So first off, thank you Taylor. And please know that comes from an amateur music maker who has a massive hunger for information to become more knowledgeable on these topics. If you had the time and inclination to share more of this, I would be grateful. If you ever did feel like passing your aggregate wisdom on in the form of a hard copy book or ebook, I would be first in line to buy a copy! Thanks again, greetings from Vancouver

Really great insights and tips! Thanks. I feel I'm guilty of putting too much reverb. It's hard not to though sometimes haha.

Great job keeping these tips concise and clear, not easy to do. I like your idea of using a transient designer to thin sounds out, almost like an alternate means of EQ. How do your tendencies tend to differ (or not) when you’re using hardware vs software? I prefer EQ boosts with hardware over software and play with tape echoes very differently than delay plugins, but in some ways I’ve wondered how much of this is due to how I relate to the interface itself rather than strengths/weaknesses of the given device.

I’m not asking this to incite the exhausting debate about which sounds “better” but more bc I’m curious if there are general differences in how you tend to relate to each, or if that way of relating more effect or device specific. Thanks for the post.
